Why/why not should women dress modestly/provocatively?

Posted by Nimmy on February 28, 2009

Miss A : Hey hey, read what IHM has written about so called provocative dressing

Miss B: Yeah,I read it,she is talking about an idealistic society, where everybody is mature and is aware of one own responsibility.Idealism is good, but reality and practicality is different.

Miss A :Can you expand?

Miss B: Yup..See,she is right when she says that ‘She does not invite it’..But in a multicultural and multifaceted society, how can you expect everybody to belive in your version of right?

Miss A :I agree, everybody is free to have their own opinion and that is what my point is about.Women are individuals and they should be free to choose what they wear and how they carry themselves.

Miss B: Any woman should be able to wear what she wants anywhere, and for that matter, so should men, but if we go by that ideology, then nudism should be perfectly acceptable in all spheres of society too. We should all be able to keep our doors unlocked when we leave home and also to keep our valuables on the table unattended while we nip to the toilet in a busy cafe too. However, human nature is unpredictable and thus we must always be on our guard. “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance”

Miss A : I agree, women who dare to break the so called norms should be prepared to face the consequencies of the effect that the dressing will bring-for instance eve teasing (yeah,I know I got into ‘blame the victim’ theory) But I still stand by what I said, women are free to wear what they like . If you don’t like it,don’t look at it.

Miss B: You messed it,In fact men like to look at such women who reveal their assets, who make private things public.

Miss A : Women don’t dress to please men, they dress to please themselves.

Miss B: Ha ha,if that was they case, why don’t they wear such revealing dress inside their house and in front of family alone ? When she wears it to public, the message is simple-that she feels good being looked at,maybe by men or maybe by women. Isn’t this ‘feel good’ thing called attention seeker?

Miss A : Oh well, some women like attention, but that doesn’t mean you can go and touch her.. Revealing dress is not a invitation for rape or abuse..

Miss B: Tell me are you offended if somebody pass comment on you while you walk down the street..

Miss A : Hell yes,I hate it.

Miss B: So tell me why do you dress in a way that will attract comments.?

Miss A :Passing comments is his problem, not mine.

Miss B: Agreed, but why do you get offended at somebody else’s comment if you feel you are right?

Miss A : ***Silence..***

Miss B: Tell me why you women want to portray yourself as sexual objects while you go on 40 km essays on asking men to stop viewing women as sexual objects? When you yourself feel and is proud of being a sexual object, why do you complain about others looking at you through such glasses..?

Miss A : See,I don’t like others looking at me as a sexual object,so I dress modestly..But modestly is subjective. What is modest to me needn’t be to another person and what is immodest to me,maybe modest to the next person. So we can’t generalize. If somebody likes to dress in a particular way,she should be free to do so.

Miss B: Tell me something, when women know that there are some sick devilish men out there in the society, should she opt to take care herself by dressing modestly,or should she go around enrolling all eve teasers to mental asylum..Tell me which of the two choices is practical?

Miss A :Taking preventive measures is practical and feasible. But well, your logic is stupid bcoz in that case, wonder how men rape 18 month old babies and 89 years old grannies? Is diapers and sluggish clothes provocative?and you think women are free from all such harassments in places like Saudi and Afghan??**rolls eyes**

Miss B: You get my point..rape is about control and not about sex. When a baby or a granny is raped,it is all about overpowering and controlling rather than sexuality. So,no matter how you dress, you are prone to such dangers..But what is wrong in taking care?

Miss A :You are asking me to shut down myself in my room so that perverts may roam around freely in the streets uh? To accept that dressing is a moral issue is to accept this: a woman must not tempt a man. We focus on Adam eating the apple because Eve gave it to him. We don’t focus on Adam’s responsibility, on why he did not say no.

Miss B: No,thatz not my point. We are a society and we have norms and cultural barriers .Your freedom ends where mine starts.Men are like that they will keep drooling over public display or private parts..

Miss A : Shame on men who are proud to declare that they are so weak enough not to control their libidos..And Oh,please don’t talk about culture.. Rape and incest and sexual abuse of children are not our culture, even though they happen all the time.I am sick of men and women who, while holding their imported cellphones and driving their imported cars, say that women should conform to certain gender roles so as to preserve our “real” culture.

Miss B: Yes,I am aware of the double faceted hypocrisy. I agree that society should provide a safe environment for all its citizens and not punish women for the few criminal men who can nor control their urges. But then again, how can government take care of each and every single citizen in the country? We have our share of responsibility..The bottom line is that in public some modesty is required to avoid problems.

Miss A : Any man who takes offence at women’s clothing should reassess his ideas. Have your opinion, but leave it at that. Perhaps if these men cannot control themselves then they should not be allowed out on the street. Moreover,it is his responsibility to act as a reasonable and decent human being. Rather than impose dress codes for women, I’d propose blindfolds for hypersensitive men.

Miss B: I completely agree with you that women are not responsible for crimes committed on them and I agree with the ‘She did not ask for it’ theory. But in our real life.theories have less importance than practicals..I agree that as far as the dress code is concerned, the problem is the uneducated and ignorant observers not the dresser. Having said that, a person cannot but be mindful since there are just too many uneducated and ignorant people out there. So,it your choice whether you choose to be daring and outgo these vultures..But trust me,it is better to take care..“The stronger sex is actually the weaker sex because of it’s weakness for the weaker sex.”

Miss A : I am going for a tea break…phew…..

Dar al-Aman and Kaffirs..

Posted by Nimmy on February 25, 2009

Honestly speaking,I am hearing this word Dar al Aman for the first time.Lately, there have been news on Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband issuing fatwas that India is a Dar al-Aman and that there shouldn’t be any jihad in India and that Hindus should not be reffered to as Kaffirs..

Islamic seminary Darul Uloom Deoband on Sunday said it regarded India as Dar al-Aman or a “Muslim-friendly country”. It ceased to be Dar al-Harb or hostile for Muslims with the end of British rule. “How can a country where you choose your own government be Dar al-Harb?” the seminary’s vice-rector Abdul Khaleque Madrasi said, adding: “If VHP has doubts, a fatwa can be issued, provided the organisation follows the prescribed procedure for obtaining a religious edict.”

In Islamic theology, geographical territories are often described as Dar al-Harb, Dar al-Islam and Dar al-Aman. The distinctions have been crucial in Muslim thought and action, said Qari Mohammed Usman, one of Darul’s senior-most teachers.

Dar al-Harb literally means “abode of war” or territory that is not under Islamic law and, if threatening to Islam, can be brought into Islam’s fold by jihad. In contrast, Dar al-Islam denotes territory under Islamic law, he said. Dar al-Aman or “abode of peace” is used to describe territory that is not under Islamic law but where Muslims can live in peace and harmony without interference in their practice of Islam. One example was India, Usman said.[source]

A major Muslim body has opposed Hindus being dubbed as `kafirs’ and pointed out that though the term does not have any derogatory connotations, it should be avoided to promote understanding between the two communities. “Strictly speaking, the word `kafir’ only means someone not belonging to Islam; but if its use hurts anyone the term should be avoided. Naumani said the idea of India as a hostile country had been part of the anti-British struggle during the Raj. “That concept is no longer relevant, it is now Dar-ul-Aman,” he said.

Explaining the change in the assessment of India by the Islamic school, Naumani said, “If Muslims get elected through a democratic process and can hold important positions, how can India become a hostile land.” He said Deoband had not yet received Singhal’s letter. “We will reply to it as and when it reaches us,” he said.

While reading this,Kislay Chandra came to my mind,he is the one I have seen who is very irritated with the word ‘Kaffir’. :) .It is just an Arabic word that means non muslim. But that said,I know that some people (muslims) use this word every now and then and maybe thatz why others feel offended. And in that case, muslims should refrain from using such words that may hinder inter-faith relationships. My advice to muslims-don’t use this word unnecessarily and out of context..My advice to non muslims don’t take offence over a single word.Life is more beautiful than to be spoiled over a petty word. You don’t belive in Allah,do you? When you don’t believe in my God,aren’t you a disbeliever to me?Am I not a disbeliver to you? How complicated is that to understand and assimilate? I don’t know, some people take life and small stuff like this way too serious..Stretch your minds and hearts a little more-stop calling others kaffirs, and stop getting offended at a word..

Smile Pinki.. bringing smile to thousands of kids with cleft lips..

Posted by Nimmy on February 24, 2009

Everybody is talking about Slumdog Millionaire,so I decided to write about Smile Pinki that won the Oscar for Best Documentary (Short Subject) .Smile Pinki is a documentary based on a real story about a girl with a cleft in her upper lip. Pinki is a five-year-old girl from some village of Mirzapur District, India, born in a desperately poor family, and with a cleft lip. They never realized it just required one simple operation, until she meets Pankaj, a social worker traveling from village to village gathering patients to go to hospital in Varanasi that provides free surgery to thousands each year.

DVD insert

Told in a vibrant style, this real-world fairy tale follows its protagonist journey to a dream smile from isolation and shame. The 39 minute film in Hindi and Bhojpuri was set in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, highlights the work of Dr Subodh Kumar Singh whose simple surgery turns poor children born with a cleft lip into smiling faces.. “Earlier she was very depressed, she wasn’t like a child at all. Now she is like any other eight-year-old,” said Pinki’s doctor, Dr Subodh Kumar.

The Oscar nomination not only got Pinki to school, but also made her a star overnight. Pinki flew down to Los Angeles to attend the ceremony with her father and doctor. The film produced and directed by Megan Mylan, nominated for Emmy-nominated for Lost Boys of Sudan, marks a departure for her.

SMILE PINKI sheds light on the global problem of cleft lip and cleft palate. According to Smile Train, more than 4.7 million children in developing countries suffer with unrepaired clefts. Each child could be saved, just like Pinki, with a simple surgery that takes as little as 45 minutes and costs as little as $250.

‘There are many other Pinkis in the world who still need help,’ the website for The Smile Train notes. ‘Millions of poor children with unrepaired clefts who are waiting and wondering if anyone will ever come along and help them. For the vast majority of them, Smile Train is their only hope.

Some associated news..

The GS Memorial Hospital — an associate of the international charity Smile Train — specialises in reconstructive surgery of cleft lips and palates. It is open every day of the week, and some 14,000 surgeries — the largest number for a single hospital in all of Asia — have been Pinky smiles, and so do 22 more in a UP hospital today[source]

Eight-year-old Pinki, on whose life the Oscar winning documentary ‘Smile Pinki’ is based, has more reasons to cheer as an Indore-based medical and management institute has offered her a full scholarship for studying at the institute.[source]

For those interested in knowing more on this subject, read more…

Cleft lip (cheiloschisis) and cleft palate (palatoschisis), which can also occur together as cleft lip and palate are variations of a type of clefting congenital deformity caused by abnormal facial development during gestation. Cleft palate is a condition in which the two plates of the skull that form the hard palate (roof of the mouth) are not completely joined.

The highest prevalence rates for (CL +/- P) are reported for Native Americans and Asians. Africans have the lowest prevalence rates.A cleft lip or palate can be successfully treated with surgery soon after birth. Cleft lips or palates occur in somewhere between one in 600-800 births.

What Causes a Cleft Lip and Cleft Palate?

In most cases, the cause of cleft lip and cleft palate is unknown. These conditions cannot be prevented. Most scientists believe clefts are due to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. There appears to be a greater chance of clefting in a newborn if a sibling, parent, or relative has had the problem. Another potential cause may be related to a medication a mother may have taken during her pregnancy. Some drugs may cause cleft lip and cleft palate. Among them: anti-seizure/anticonvulsant medications, acne medications containing Accutane, and methotrexate, a drug commonly used for treating cancer, arthritis, and psoriasis. Cleft lip and cleft palate may also occur as a result of exposure to viruses or chemicals while the fetus is developing in the womb. In other situations, cleft lip and cleft palate may be part of another medical condition. .

What Problems Are Associated With Cleft Lip Cleft Palate?

Cleft may cause problems with feeding, ear disease, speech and socialization. Due to lack of suction, an infant with a cleft may have trouble feeding Individuals with cleft also face many middle ear infections which can eventually lead to total hearing loss. Because the lips and palate are both used in pronunciation, individuals with cleft usually need the aid of a speech therapist. Bonding with the infant, socializing with family and community may be interrupted by the unexpected appearance, unusual speech and the surgical interventions necessary. Support for the parents as well as for the child can be pivotal. A cleft palate/lip may impact an individual’s self-esteem, social skills, and behavior. There is a large amount of research dedicated to the psychosocial development of individuals with cleft palate. Self-concept may be adversely affected by the presence of a cleft palate

The images are so disturbing and depressing,so I am not sharing it here-call me a coward or an escapist, but I can’t deal with it..I hope this never happens to anymore babies. When I can’t even look at the image,I understand the extend of stigma these kids undergo in their life..It could happen to your baby or my baby,we can’t prevent it from happening. So next time you see a kid or adult with cleft lips, please don’t turn your face away from them.If you can’t help them, atleast don’t hurt them..

Early morning, this post made my head burning and depressed.Think of those thousands or millions who live this life, for no fault of theirs..Life is unfair :(
