Of horoscopes and making choices….

Until a few months ago, I was a regular reader of horoscope-column in newspapers. Honestly,I don’t believe in horoscopes, but I feel good reading them. 😉 Though not a believer, I have never trashed anybody’s belief in this system. My friends, majority of them being hindus, are hard-core believers of astrology. They believe that everything is fore-written. Two of my dear, very dear friends, have not got married yet. They say,”There is some issues with my horoscope,as like Chowa Dosham..Hence it is possible for me to marry a guy of that type(horoscope) alone. One of them was in love with a man,but their relationship was not approved by the family as this guy belonged to a different(lower) caste. So,for this sole reason of horoscope incompatibility, both my friends are yet to get married, despite the infinite number of proposals coming up from various ends.Yesterday I talked with one of them and she was crying as she feels bad when her mother is always worried and upset over her increasing age.I was wondering why would and why should this stuff -horoscope-matter so much to human beings…And I started exploring the world of Astrology..

Astrology is the study of the influence that distant cosmic objects, usually stars and planets, have on human lives. The position of the sun, stars, moon and planets at the time of people’s birth (not their conception) is said to shape their personality, affect their romantic relationships and predict their economic fortunes, among other divinations.

ASTROLOGYSun-sign astrology, which is the astrology upon which newspaper horoscopes are based. It is probably the simplest form, because nothing more than the date of someone’s birthday is needed to generate a sun-sign horoscope. To produce a more accurate reading, astrologers check to see what sign each planet was in at the time of birth .The planets and signs combine with other elements, such as houses and angles, to form a complex and often very specific profile of a subject’s personality, life and future prospects.

The Twelve Signs of the Zodiac

Each sign has certain characteristics; but the signs are also categorized in several ways. First, they are grouped by element:

  • Fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) are associated with action, enthusiasm and leadership, as well as an openness to change.
  • Water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) embody emotion, sensitivity and compassion.
  • Earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) symbolize practicality and a focus on material goals.
  • Air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) are the signs of the intellect.

Astrology is all about influence of celestial bodies upon unborn babies,i.e,when one is born, the time and location of celestial bodies determine or influence his/her future, his economic life, love life and so on.

Islamically,it is forbidden to believe in horoscopes.

Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes in what he says, has denied what was revealed to Muhammad.”

The above ruling is based on the fact that what was revealed to Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) asserts that the knowledge of the Unseen belongs to Allah alone and that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has no knowledge of it, much less anyone else: “Say: I do not tell you that the treasures of Allah are with me or that I know the Unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel; I follow only what is revealed to me.” (Al-An`aam: 50)

If, after being aware of this clear and explicit statement of the Qur’an, a Muslim believes that some people can foretell future events and know the secrets of the Unseen, he has indeed denied what was revealed to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)

I am wondering how can electro magnetic effect of planets ,time years away, can affect one’s destiny.. ?Maybe, maybe not..I have no much knowledge ,so I won’t comment..But isn’t it ‘too much’ that we spoil one’s life, make choices solely based on the horoscope provided by an astrologer..Or is it that we just ought to live life as per the instructions laid down by those planets far away….I don’t know…But I find it odd that somebody tells you that “You are now 18,you’ll get married at 24,get job at 32,have cancer aat 45,die at 56 “…

p.s: I know of many muslims who secretly visits astrologists..

  1. I am neither for or against astrology…but when we see people not getting married because of sevai dosham it is sad…when i told i wont see horoscope, my colleagues said, no problem..but dont marry a sevai dosham girl…i was told it is scientifically proven ….i havent tried to explore further…

well these weekly horoscope, i am not sure how far one can relate to…but in my experience whenever i started things on a bad day or bad time, some how it has not clicked…so i do ensure that whatever major events in my life, i do on a good day and time..

My close friend for whom things are really bad for the last one year is a muslim..i just saw the events and tried to match the days he joined duty , he shifted house etc etc..you know all those days are bad…i was tempted to tell him next time when he was going for a job etc to avoid bad days..but i refrained thinking , it is all faith…

By the way GOD is also faith…has anybody proved?

at the end of the day it is faith…

      🙂 Hi Sunder….
I agreee, these things are a matter of faith..People belive in unseen god, while some don’t.. But in this case, they say astrology is a science and is based on arithmetical calculations rather than just blind faith as like the rest of religious matters… and hence I am wondering if its real or fake..

You will be wondering as its fake until you get proper foundation in the field of astrology. You will be wondering as its real when you observe the facts by research.

  2. I dont believe in horoscopes either. I have written my entire views on horoscope (titled Horrorscope 😉 ) in this post:

Consider the entire post as my comment and please do leave me your thoughts on the post, oops, comment !!!

Once a person told that there are no real friend on this Earth.
After some years passed he got a real friend. Then he changed his opinion and belief.
Similarly some people do not believe astrology due to lack of sufficient experience.
There are several people on this Earth experiencing the truth of astrology.

  3. hmm so there are others like me who read horoscopes but never believed in them 🙂

      all these are steps.

      reading astrology
      understanding astrology
      researching astrology
      experiencing astrology

All people need not stay at one stage
some people may read, some may understand, some other do research and others may experience….

Even earlier step is also appreciated.

  4. I did a project on Palmistry as part of my Biology project and that time I learned a lot about hands. I won’t believe in it but I could predict traits based on hands. It was interesting.

Astrology to me is also something like this. It is interesting and timepass. I don’t believe in it but I do check for sun signs. I read Linda Goodman and used to analyze back then. But silly stuff like planets not matching so marrying off to trees stuff…don’t believe in that. I do like to compare traits of different personalities based on Sun and Mooon signs though.

🙂 I am gonna sent you a snap of my palm…later… -Nimmy

    • Ha..ha..ha.. sure sure. I need to find a tree first then I will sit under it with a parrot. 😆

  5. So many books and readers on astrology but alas so less on astronomy. Future prediction and reviewing past is favourite passtime of all intellects or brain power of human race. And all this palmistry or taro cards ot astrology will never end, how much ban you impose on them…
Its just similar to rewriting history again and again for convienence of understanding past by each genration.

🙂 No,I am not against them..But just questioning their claim to be scientific and that influence upon one’s life is so strong that we can’t make a choice outside the given horoscope..-Nimmy

  6. I like to read astros .. its kinda fun.. 😛 When they say something good ,well you can feel good about it 🙂 But if it is bad , just forget it 😛

ha ha,I adopt the same policy.. -Nimmy

    • I am with you nimmy & vishesh. Everyone loves horoscope giving glimpse of good day. Otheriwse they are just hollow predictions… 🙂

I have read somewhere that Swami Vivekanandan has said if one thinks of seeing an astrologer, he should instead visit a psychologist. After reading your post, I googled and here are the excerpts:

“He said, “Astrology and all these mystical things are generally signs of a weak mind; therefore as soon as they are becoming prominent in our minds, we should see a physician, take good food and rest.”

“Swami Vivekananda seems to be one of the prominent saints who has condemned, openly, the use of Astrology among masses. According to him, ‘Will’ is everything as it directly comes from God, and God is beyond all planets. Moreover he says, why to rush to Astrology for explanations of our deeds, when our Karmas more pronouncedly present that explanation. It is because of our own deeds what we are built today. And it is the deeds done today, which will make our future of tomorrow. So let us look for the present, as simple as that. ”

  7. What matters is whether the individual has it in him/her to accept everything as the consequences of his/her actions. Sadly that is not there. It is either astrology that carries the brunt for some and for others it is the belief in some God (different for different people) and his prescribed rules and regulations.
Astrology, palmistry etc seem to have something to them. So I choose to believe that what we now see and hear is only part of something which as of now is truly unknown to us, but has been used misused, twisted and mangled beyond recognition by humans down the ages, similar in fashion to all those superstitions, rituals and beliefs people follow without question, not knowing anything much about it, but just believing the so-called “interpretation” by supposedly “learned” people who themselves differ from each other on many occasions and even fight over it.
If a girl and boy are willing to marry each other without a care for what their horoscope says and willing to take what follows as just part of life, nothing like it. But do people hav the guts?? Are they ready to come out of the conditioning of blaming stars for everything?? Do you know, even though horoscopes are matched, the same astrologers say, what has to happen will happen anyway. Then why the hell match horoscopes, is my question!!
    Ooops long comment! 😛

  8. The way I look at it, so many people get married without horoscopes and are totally fine.. And if all this were true, surely, everybody who went by everything that is predicted, should have a totally problem free life? Having said that, I am aware that there is a scientific basis to astrology. People who believe in it – swear by it, the rest of us just ignore it.. I do not believe in it, but am still amazed that the horoscope that was made when I was born has quite a bit of true predictions.. So I guess, it is all a matter of faith.. but if things don’t change despite following astrology, then probably, it is time to take a chance, and ignore what the astrologists say?

For me, Horoscopes predicting our future is like knowing the outcome of a evenly matched cricket match or a Hitchcock movie beforehand. Not interested. :).I would rather go through my life unwarned and enjoy the unpredictability of my choices & destiny.
Regarding star signs, yes, I used to believe in them when I was much younger, but now I dont really bother much about them.

    • yeah unprepared is the way I would like to live too 🙂

      • and the question is does all this really make us ‘prepared’ in the first place? for those who believe in it I mean?

I dont see any proof of any of these things being able to ‘predict’ anything…

  9. It is a shame that even in 21st century marriages could be blocked by superstitions. Your friends should be bold enough to take their own decisions regardless of family/society approval.

  10. I too belong to the ‘I -read- but- dont believe ‘category Nimmy:)
I love Linda Goodman’s books:) but then again purely for timepass:)

but for many it turns from a timepass or a non-serious activity to one that they start believing in blindly….

thats the thin line thats dangerous

I dont belive in anything..not astrology, not palmistry nothing..

but at the same time a few of my loved ones do..so one objects to a certain extent otherwise they do go on doing their thing

  11. i totally believe in horoscopes… they are fun to read and speculate… totally timepass… 🙂

Hi Nimmy! Nice to see you here!

Nimmy..on your horoscope topic. While in Islam it is prohibited to go for such things unfortunately I find all the ‘jataka panickars’ of my region, trichur, giving you a lofty appointment (come after 45 days, i’m busy kind of a thing while just 20 yrs ago he used to be a ‘choriyun kuthi irrikunna panicker’ ever ready to jump at your beck and call…god i am drifting).

what i wanna say is that nowadays all these guys are like vvips and the mallu muslim has contributed to no lesser extent in making him that. mallu muslims now get even the birth chart made, forget making jatakams for marriage. even mallu christians have started doing that.

my point is not that. what will happen to the souls of these non-believer sinners when they die?

Yeah, you are right..These days, newsapers are filled with ads of such people… And regarding non-belivers of astrology,i think we can atleast be happy that we lived our life in our own way and according to our choices rather than following a man-written fate chart.. -Nimmy

  13. Nimmy .. i very often read your blog but probably never commented before .. Its better not to believe them ..

Something like written by Linda Goodman is based on experience .. so its like many of people have shown similar behaviour .. such type of astrology is more adapt at predicting behaviour rather than charting your future time line .. this one is more generalistic in nature

The other one based on planetory motions .. is a bit more “scientific” in nature as it is based on some form of mathematics which takes into account planetory motion of different planets .. (underlying principle is that from any point on earth at a given time all planets have unique position which is not repeated in near future ) .. but then it has its limitations and can not predict everything.. and its not generalist in nature … so very often what we read in papers is a poor imitation tried by different people to fit this type of astro into Linda type simple predictions ..

May be for a specific person it can predict something .. but then also it can work only for people who can make predictions .. not for people who just know it .. (people who can make predictions can actually predict even if they do not know or have studied any form of astrology)

      Hi SP,welcome 🙂

I understand and echo your thoughts..but in the end,the question remains unanswered..Is astrlogy true and is it scientific as they claim.. 🙂 and yes,its a mystery how some people can predict upcoming events…I have read about such people in magazines..

      Do come again.. -Nimmy

  14. Astrology = BS.

That’s all I can say about astrology :p It IS mildly entertaining though. 😉

    Hope you been good, Nimmy.

lol… How you doing Yaamyn. Me fine…-Nimmy

  15. I think there should be some logic or atleast a method by which they are calculated – that might have been devised quite Scientifically! But now, like everything else, it has been abused by certain people and we cannot trust how much a jyothisht knows! But my father has a book where each year of his life has been written in a book (one page per year) and he insists that it has been happening correctly till now. The problem is, they write cryptically – like a good thing would happen this year. But you can always associate some good thing that happened that year to the prediction. I don’t know how accurate it is – Since it is written in Telugu (and cryptic at that), I am not able to verify. If only it had been in Tamil, I would have de-crypted it by now!!

BTW you have been tagged on the topic ‘Fast Furious and Danceable songs’. Try to do it when you have time. And last time, in the Slow Soulful and Melodious songs tag, I had selected the song you had recommended ‘Dheenadayalo Rama’ as the top song, among all recommended ones. I don’t know if you saw that, as you were in a blog break back then.

      • September 7th, 2009

Yeah, even i am not sure of how true astrology it is as some people have strong faith in it and they prove it with their life experiences..

will surely do the tag as i had enjoyed your earlier tag… 🙂

  16. These days, most astrologers dont “predict” correctly. No two people read a horoscope the same way. So how can anyone have trust ! Its more like a placebo effect. I know many people who are so addicted to astrology that instead of having faith in themselves and doing something worthwhile in life, they waste time and money on half baked astrologers.

One does not believe till things foretold come true. Then, one either dilutes his skepticism , or becomes aredent follower.

Dr. Augustine Joseph of Bharath Matha has written an unusual book on Nadi Jyothish, titled “jyothishatthinte Yukthi”. I read it and was curious, and went to a Nadi Astrologer at Panampilly Nagar. He just read out the names of my family members from a Leaf. I was astounded.

Now, I have diluted my skepticism. There is much in the universe that we do not know yet.

————————Welcome here..I agree with you..therez much beyond our knowledge..

  19. The astro section in the newspapers and magazines are of no use. They are very generic and don’t apply to all of them. Hardcore astrologers know the ways to accurately calculate one’s future. But here is the deal, if the future is not happened yet, how can it be known to the individual mind? Planets do affect us, but not in the physical realm but through subtle forces, which have no physical proof, so I don’t expect everyone to believe it. Perhaps someday Quantum physics will prove it, but material science hasn’t completely accepted Quantum physics yet. According to quantum physics, information can be transmitted from one place to another in an instant, no matter what the distance is. I am not very knowledgeable in this, but I just read a few bits here and there.

But the question is, is this it? is what said by the Astrologers our fate? and is there no escape? There is an escape route and some people take that route the moment they find out what it is all about.

Your future is written by you, actively. But if you want to alter your course, the egoistic individual mind will be very much incapable. Think about it, if you find the way out of this and that way is just a side effect of something else much bigger, do you still need to believe in it? Which is why Mohammed probably doesnt see the need to believe it and if people do follow the Namaz (which I think has some deeper meaning than just prayer) they don’t need to believe in it either!

  20. hi nimmy,
original thinking and forceful, argumentative representations, leaving a “wondering aloud” kind of invitation that ensure a warm welcome for diverse opinions . (not just this particular post, but your conceivable BLOG-personality that unveils through your “experiment”.)
astrology could genuinely be baptized as genre of science, as the nomenclature of the term contains ‘logos’ in it.
based on mathematical calculations? ok. agreed.but still, how accurate are those calculations?
the solar system, planetary positions in particular, do affect life on Earth.(limiting the focus on to the devil you know) Brings about visible changes in behavioural patterns in flora and fauna, as has been unmistakably, if not sufficiently evidenced by such changes during lunar and solar eclipses. the high ‘n low tides of the ocean too has a direct bearing on the moon.
    my argument is..
shouldn’t it be the time – when, a flattered ovum smiles down on one particular tall, dark and handsome sperm -(a moneybags sperm is surreptitiously exempted from such prerequisites and some ova are adept at the dubious act of winking at multiple suitors simultaneously)-from a swarm that jostle at her doorstep like wanna be employees in front of a recruitment agent from “gulf”, logically considered as the beginning of a new life on this planet, rather than the time a disgruntled ‘n utterly misguided foetus bids farewell to a rather extended vacation of swimming in the amniotic ocean ?
why the time the baby comes out eyes wide shut and clamouring, sliding through the slimy thighs of it’s mother?
people who claim to be in- the-know says, the accuracy of horoscopic predictions greatly depend on the accuracy of the exact time the baby’s head emerges from the vagina.(mine was written as per that such timing, my mother claims and i hit my head wondering what an impeccable timing i chose to stage my grand entry)!
if that is the scenario to follow, then here is a point to ponder; what about breech births? and what about the babies who insist on the accompaniment of shining silver blades of scissors and force ups and what-nots to incise their way out, leaving indelible scars on the mother’s belly and psyche? what will be their “exact” time of birth and how accurate will be their forebodings?
Nevertheless, I for one, share a love-hate relationship with my astrological graffiti. Accepting the ones that soothes my subliminal stimuli and discarding, often with dreadful disgust, the depressing doomsday doctrines!
yet, I believe in destiny and by extension,GOD!
everything about your life, each moment you choose to be alive, is predetermined by a higher, ostensibly unfathomable, undecipherable power!I choose to name that power GOD and I do not have any bones to pick with anyone who choose to name that power,by spelling that name backwards!Absolutely none. Nope! But whether my destiny is determined by stars staggering in the stratosphere is subject to solid speculation!
and the ‘sun signs’ by Linda Goodman is good man! she has authentically argued about the awesome collective characteristics and idiosyncrasies of individuals born under specific sun signs!I used to rely on her study, still do, to get an inkling of insight into the personal traits of any human that dare to cross into the visible vicinity of my vicarious trauma.
there is no other pliable yet viable excuse for why sagittarians are sensitive, scorpions are good at sex and revenge, taurians never allow themselves closure from a perceived insult, gemini are good at multitasking ‘n self promotion, capricornians are career obsessed mother lovers, pisces are poets ,librans adept at the balancing act and aquarians are loonie geniuses.
by the way Nimmy, what’s your sun sign?
oops! this is a comment and a HALF,lengthwise that is, I do not possess the uncanny knack of Vimmuuu 😉

there are horoscopes and making choices both in Western and Indian Styles. Some in the forms of Circles and some other like square type. We can systematically get benefits from them astrologically.
